From Barcelona to Madrid - A Tour of Spain
Sample Itinerary: Barcelona - Seville - Granada - Madrid
-
Day 1 - Morning in Barcelona
Leave your bags at your five-star hotel and explore the Gothic Quarter on your own. Wander down Las Ramblas, being sure to stop at the Mercat de Boqueria for some jamon Iberico and fresh fruits. In the evening, explore the district’s tapas bars (Tapas by Sensei is our favorite!).
-
Day 2 - From the Cathedral to the Sea
A small-group bicycle tour is a great way to sample the breadth of Barcelona’s wonders. From the Gothic Quarter, you’ll ride through Parc de la Citadella, where Gustav Eiffel’s proposal for an iron tower was turned down for the 1888 World’s Exhibition, over to the famed Sagrada Familia, then end the day at a beachside restaurant for tapas and cold beverages. (Fun fact – the beach was installed for the 1992 Olympics, and its sand was imported from the Sahara Desert!)
-
Day 3 - Gaudi's Masterpieces
Considered the father of Modernism, Antoni Gaudi’s style can be seen across Barcelona. Start your day with an early access tour of the Sagrada Familia; from the light-filled floor of the main nave to the heights of the Passion Façade, you’ll be moved by the cathedral’s immensity and beauty. Later, make your way on your own through L’Eixample to see his apartment buildings, and wrap up your tour at Park Guell where the raised plaza offers unparalleled views of the city. For dinner, head back to the Gothic Quarter for paella (ask us for recommendations…).
-
Day 4 - Off to Seville
With first-class tickets on a high-speed train, you’ll be in Seville in time for a late lunch and tour of the Seville Cathedral. Marvel at the colorful tiles and Moorish architecture, then make your way through the ancient streets for a traditional “tapco” (tapas walk). Be sure to try the salamorejo, and ask us for our secret locals-only tapas bar so you can try the “Cigar de Becquer.”
-
Day 5 - Explore the City of Opera
More operas have been set in Seville (153) than any other city, including the famed “Barber of Seville” and “Carmen.” Explore the breadth of the city on a private bicycle tour, where you’ll follow the Guadalquivir throughout the city, enjoying sights ranging from the Torre de Oro, the famed Seville bullring, the Alcazar and the Plaza de Espana – one of the most Instagrammable locations in all of Spain!
-
Day 6 - On to Granada
Watch the Spanish landscape change as you head southeast toward Granada – home to the Alhambra and the last Moorish outpost in Europe. After checking in to your five-star hotel, tour the cathedral, where you’ll see Queen Isabella’s final resting place. As evening begins to fall, you’ll make your way through the twisting streets and white houses of the Albayzin, arriving at Plaza Mirador de St. Nicolas in time to watch the Alhambra glow red in the setting sun.
-
Day 7 - Tales from the Alhambra
You’ll spend the day on a private tour of the famed Alhambra fortress. As you enter through the Justice Gate, you’ll pass through the four palaces decorated with traditional Moorish designs, before heading to the Generalife’s gardens and summer palace. Following your tour, wander about the town of Granada until your evening train to Madrid departs.
-
Day 8 - The Art of Spain
After breakfast at your five-star Madrid hotel, you’ll head to the Prado for a private tour of Spain’s greatest art museum. From Velasquez’ “Las Meninas” to Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights” and all the Reubens and Rembrandts in between, you’ll be awed by the breadth and quality of the art on display. Finish the day with a stroll through El Retiro – an amazing city park featuring the Crystal Palace.
-
Day 9 - PIcasso's Masterpiece
On your last day in Spain, you’ll tour La Reina Sofia - the national museum of 20th Spanish century art, and home to unmatched collections of the art of two of the country’s greatest masters, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Be sure to set aside time to see Picasso’s masterpiece, Guernica.
